Peggy Vesper

Peggy moved full time to Utopia area in 2008. After retiring from Bandera Electric Cooperative in 2017, she pursued her youthful dream of becoming an artist. Primarily self-taught she has had the opportunity to paint and learn in several local art workshops held by Guy Morrow. The ranges of subjects she paint are wide: Sunsets, local Sabinal Canyon views, fields, rivers, lakes and photos she takes on her travels. She also does commissioned paintings of landscapes, views and Pet Portraits.

“I paint with acrylic paints on many surfaces, a favorite being panel boards made by my husband, but also canvas and canvas boards. I try to capture the beauty around me. Many of my paintings are started from a photograph but then take on a life of their own.”

Peggy’s studio in Utopia also serves as a private gallery, open by appointment. She also shows and sells her work at many local Art & Craft shows including the Utopia Spring and Fall Shows, the annual Comfort Fine Art fair, Market days at Lost Maples Winery and others.

Jack Krietzburg

New to the Lone Star State, Jack is native Southern California. His ancestors are among those noted for settling Santa Monica when orange groves were the stock and trade.

Later spending 29 years in Las Vegas, Nevada, Jack put his artistic nature into a successful commercial printing company. Upon selling the company in 1998, Jack and his wife Sharon, moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico. A five-year endeavor into designing custom wood screen doors,  reignited Jack’s passion for painting. Jack entered, showed and sold his paintings in many venues across New Mexico.

With a move to Sharon’s native state of Texas, Jack’s enthusiasm for painting and testing the boundaries of subjects continues to evolve. He paints everyday simple subjects in a realistic and representational style.

Jane Graham

I am Jane Graham, an East Texas artist whose inspiration is drawn from
immersing myself in nature. I paint the Texas Hill Country landscape,
specifically in a town named Utopia! The Sabinal River runs through my
property there, with its centuries old, Cypress tree lined banks and crystal
clear waters. It has been my muse since childhood. One minute, the calm
ripples of the water flow outward, the next, raging floodwaters create
churning and upheaval, quite similar to the rhythms of one’s life.

I paint in oils, using a variety of palette knives to create vibrant textural
work. Influenced by Fauvism, my color intensity and mark making express
my emotional experience of the subject. My current body of work depicts
the Sabinal River in all its beauty.

Rather than trying to paint a realistic view, I communicate the light and movement of the subject. As the river is ever-changing, I capture snippets of its beauty in a small format inviting the viewer in for a closer inspection. My work evolves childhood
memories of the family swimming hole seeking respite from the intense
Texas summer heat in these frigid waters.

I’ve had the opportunity to live in many states and abroad. Exposure to
different cultures and visiting the world’s greatest museums including the
Smithsonian, Louvre, and Prado have been a major influence in driving
me to make art.

I studied art history and then fashion merchandising in college, but put my
studies aside to marry and start a family. After raising my family, I once again enrolled in college to pursue an art degree. I graduated in 2008 with a BFA with from the University of Texas at Tyler, Texas with an emphasis in art history and studio art.

During that period, I engaged in learning and working in several mediums, but eventually narrowed my focus to painting.

My itinerant lifestyle and exposure to many types of people and lands has greatly shaped my artistic endeavors. The beauty in nature continues to inspire my curiosity and a passionate lifelong journey creating art.

Guy Morrow

From a very early age I spent hours on the floor coloring and drawing.  My parents thought there might be something wrong with me.  I had no interest in toy trucks and cars.  Instead, I spent my time building forts and making gardens and going fishing.  While in junior high, I took a correspondence course in taxidermy.  From there I went to mounting birds, deer and wild hogs.  I soon found that painting is what I wanted to do.  My mother had me painting with Bob Garden, a seascape artist. I was introduced to artist Dick Turner at the age of 15, who taught me form by light and how to apply oil paint.  This made a total connection for me. I painted from memory for about two years to force my mind to create lifelike subjects. A lot of time was spent going to the library to study techniques and the old masters.

I later went into watercolor and used egg-tempera for oil under paintings.  It wasn’t until then, a fellow teenage artist friend, John Cobb showed me the work of Andrew Wyeth.  Then I saw in his books that he did the entire painting in egg-tempera.  Once I saw the possibilities, I started raising my own chickens and collected rainwater to use in my ground up paint that I made each day. In time I would find myself outside painting on location doing what is called plein air.

I paint a variety of subjects so I don’t get bored doing the same thing. I went on and graduated from King High School in Corpus Christi to receive the Art Award for most outstanding art student.  I had big plans in my mind I to go to art school at the prestigious Chicago Art Institute.  Never made it , I sometimes regret this.  I found myself working, selling art supplies and building picture frames, all of which were of great value.  In time, I would release several prints of coastal art which was marketed along the Gulf coast and East coast along with a few parts of California and the Great Lakes.

My work did well and ended up in over 200 galleries and frame shops.  I have painted several large murals in Corpus Christi.  The city council liked my art and sent me to Toledo Spain for a one man show that went on for three weeks.  Under the Reagan administration, Ambassador Robert Strauss took a collection of my paintings to be hung in the United States Embassy in Moscow, Russia for one year. Today my paintings are touring major museums, with some of America’s finest artists and sculptors affiliated with the American Society of Marine Artists.

Sara Willrodt

My interest in art started at a very young age.  I discovered that I enjoyed drawing and sketching different images and still life.  I was enrolled in art classes as my mother saw the potential and wanted me to pursue the interest in painting.  My initial experience with painting classes started with sketching with charcoal, and later transitioned into pastels.  I left painting to pursue a career in Pharmacy at the University of Texas in Austin and
graduated in 1985.

My interest in painting after graduation was more of a hobby.  I started by enrolling in classes, and my first watercolor class was at the Art Institute of San Antonio. Throughout the years, I continue to attend many art workshops, with some great artists, and classes to continue enhancing my painting skills.

At present, I split my time between San Antonio and Utopia, Texas which is in the Texas Hill Country. This has led me to be inspired by the scenic Hill Country, and the different rivers located in the area.  The mediums I use today are oils, and occasionally use acrylics.  My affection today ranges from landscapes to still life and birds.  My new excitement is a series of impressionistic abstract landscape scenes.

Artist Statement
Painting is at the core of my being. Creating beautiful visual experiences for others
makes my heart sing. Painting is an expression of gratitude for my maker and all the
beauty He has surrounded me with. I take my inspiration from the Word as well as
the beautiful environment around me. The rivers and rolling landscapes of my home
provide me with an endless supply of subjects and ideas. I love organic and flowing
forms, however I also find myself creating pieces with clean lines and plenty of
whitespace. My background in communication design shines through each piece in
tone and energy, communicating to the viewer on multiple levels.
